DEVILDRIVER – Bassist Quits, resination letter – 2011-03-31

Bassist Jonathan Miller of DEVILDRIVER has released the following statement:

“I just wanted to thank all of the DEVILDRIVER fans around the world for their die-hard love and support for the past nine years.
“Yesterday, I decided to leave DEVILDRIVER. It was the most difficult decision of my life but it is something that I needed to do for myself.
“I had the best times of my life hanging out with all of you guys, but it is time for me to move on.
“Much love to everyone.”

In December 2010, Miller announced that “the drugs and alcohol” “finally caught up” with him after spending the bulk of the last decade on the road with DEVILDRIVER. He added that “the damage [was] catching up with [him] mentally and physically” and that he was going to enter “an intense rehabilitation program” in January “in order for [him] to reclaim [his] health and the person who [he] once was.” He also stressed that he needed “to make a change so that [he could] save [his] own life and keep the friends that [he] still [had] left.”

Filling in for Miller on the road with DEVILDRIVER for the past few months has been the band’s tour manager, Bubble (a.k.a. Aaron Patrick), who has previously played with BURY YOUR DEAD.

In a February 2011 interview with Rock Radio‘s Tom RussellDEVILDRIVER frontman Dez Fafara stated about Miller‘s health issues:

Jon‘s getting himself well at this point and we hope to have him join the fold, happy and healthy and back with us. Aaron Patrick has played around fifty to sixty shows with us. He’s doing a great job, the fans have really taken to him and understand what’s happening with Jon, and that Jon needs to get himself better, and you don’t want your friends passing away on the road. So let’s get him well, shall we?”

Later on, BLABBERMOUTH.NET received permission to post the actual resignation letter he sent to his former bandmates announcing his departure from the group. It follows here in its entirety:

“To DezSteveJeffMike and John

“Gentlemen, I am compelled to inform you all at this juncture in time of my resignation as the bass player of DEVILDRIVER.

“I love each and every one of you with all of my being and heart, but this is not the appropriate time for me to return to the band.

“I completely understand if the group needs to move on without me for good and am willing to accept that. More importantly, I would like to express my feelings to all of you concerning my departure fromDEVILDRIVER.

“It has been apparent in my behavior in the past year that my own personal/private issues have come to the forefront of the band’s focus; and that I have become an emotional drain on the rest of the band. This is unfair to all involved, band and crew alike. I feel that my continued presence in DEVILDRIVER at this time would not be healthy for the team. I also am aware that some of our relationships have become negatively affected during our course as a touring band.

“First and foremost, I would like to emphasize my love and gratitude to each and every one of you. All music/band-related issues aside, each of you holds a special place in my heart and I consider you all my brothers. The last thing I would want to witness would be the termination of any of our friendships. I will always be your true friend forever and I would be crushed to lose anyone of you as lifelong friends.

“I need time away from music, the touring lifestyle and want my spirit to grow and strengthen on my own.

“I have felt isolated from the pack for months now but am slowly beginning to feel as if I am coming into my own for the first time.

“My heartstrings are in a constant tug of war to quell this storm of emotions but I know in my gut that I need to take a step back from the band and evaluate my life at this point.

“I have shared the most memorable, untouchable, unbelievable, unmatched and unique experiences during our time as a fellowship of road dogs…. I thank you all for the beautiful memories and lifelong friendships.

“This is the hardest decision I have ever had to make.

“I will keep all of you in my heart forever as best friends.

“Your brother,

Jonathan Miller

SYMPHONY X – The “Iconoclast” artwork and track listing – 2011-03-25

SYMPHONY X brand new album “Iconoclast”, is  due in Europe on June 17 and in North America on June 21 via Nuclear Blast Records. The artwork was handled by illustrator and film concept artist Warren Flanagan (“Watchmen”“The Incredible Hulk”“2012”), who states:

“The idea was to create imagery that was a little darker in tone to previous SYMPHONY X albums and to represent the overall theme of‘Iconoclast’ into the artwork. The whole concept came from [SYMPHONY X guitarist] Mike [Romeo], who had a strong idea of what the cover should represent based off the music. I just ran with it. When the album’s title was decided on, I focused the image based on the meaning of it. I also wanted to use the band’s signature ‘masks’ but present them in a way that connected to the new album.”

SYMPHONY X lead guitarist Michael Romeo comments about Flanagan‘s art:

“We worked with Warren on the last CD, ‘Paradise Lost’, and have a good relationship with him. When I talk to Warren about artwork ideas, a lot of times we end up making comparisons to films and movies. With the new CD, ‘Iconoclast’, the music and lyrics have a darker mechanical/technological theme, and I remember us talking about scenes from films like ‘The Matrix’ and‘Terminator’. From there, we sent him some songtitles and lyrics (songs like ‘Dehumanized’‘Bastards Of The Machine’‘Electric Messiah’) and just let Warren run with the ball. He has a great imagination and style, and he totally gets what we are trying to convey with the music.”

The track listing for the jewel-cased version of “Iconoclast” is:

01. Iconoclast
02. The End Of Innocence
03. Dehumanized
04. Bastards Of The Machine
05. Heretic
06. Children Of A Faceless God
07. Electric Messiah
08. Prometheus (I Am Alive)
09. When All Is Lost

The track listing for the 2-CD special edition digipak version of “Iconoclast” is:

CD 1:

01. Iconoclast
02. The End Of Innocence
03. Dehumanized
04. Bastards Of The Machine
05. Heretic
06. Children Of A Faceless God
07. When All Is Lost

CD 2:

01. Electric Messiah
02. Prometheus (I Am Alive)

VICIOUS RUMORS – “Murderball” audio stream – 2011-03-25

“Murderball”, a brand new song from veteran California power metallersVICIOUS RUMORS, can be streamed below (courtesy of AOL‘s Noisecreep). The track comes off the band’s new album, “Razorback Killers”, which will be released in Europe on March 28 (except in Germany, where it will arrive three days earlier) and in the U.S. on April 5 via SPV/Steamhammer.

Larry Howe – Drums
Kiyoshi Morgan – Guitar
Stephen Goodwin – Bass
Geoff Thorpe – Guitar

“Murderball” audio stream:

01. Murderball
02. Black
03. Razorback Blade
04. Blood Stained Sunday
05. Pearl Of Wisdom
06. All I Want Is You
07. Axe To Grind
08. Let The Garden Burn
09. Rite Of Devastation
10. Deal With The Devil

Commented guitarist/mainman Geoff Thorpe:

“The older we get, the more wicked VICIOUS RUMORS sound. We’ve definitely not slowed down — quite the opposite — we have even more drive. Our fans won’t see a single VICIOUS RUMORS show where we don’t go to our limits and beyond.”

The reasons for VICIOUS RUMORS‘ high-powered performance? Thorpe has a plausible explanation:

“The metal is in our blood!!!! Plus we always have an awesome line-up. Larry Howe on drums and vocals, our bassistStephen Goodwin and guitarist Kiyoshi Morgan, and in Brian Allenwe’ve found the best vocalist you could possibly get for these kind of songs.” Brian Allen joined the VICIOUS RUMORS fold one and a half years ago at the recommendation of Matt McCourt (WILD DOGS), a longtime friend whom Thorpe met up with at the Headbangers Open Air. “Matt had praised Brian, and I thought that he’d be perfect for VICIOUS RUMORS,” Thorpe said. His assessment soon proved true: from the beginning, Allen showed his great potential during intense rehearsals. “We immediately noticed this raw, pure quality in him,” Thorpe said. “Like a snowball, something very big developed very quickly out of small beginnings. During our five-week European tour, Brian got nothing but positive reactions from our fans.”

So Brian Allen and Kiyoshi Morgan are — along with Thorpe, bassistStephen Goodwin and drummer Larry Howe, of course — two of the elemental parameters which make “Razorback Killers” such a dynamic powerhouse of an album. Three other musicians deserve to be mentioned: the guest guitarists Mark McGeeEric Peterson and Brad Gillis. “Isn’t it fantastic that Mark returned and contributed those amazing solos on two songs?” Thorpe asked. McGee was a band member between 1986 and 1995 and has launched veritable guitar solos on “Blood Stained Sunday”and “Pearl Of Wisdom”. “Mark and I trading solos just like the old days,” enthused Thorpe, who also can’t hold back his delight at Eric Peterson‘s impassioned solo passages on “Murderball”. “Eric has been a friend for many years and is the driving force in TESTAMENT,” Thorpe said. “His solo in ‘Murderball’ is a perfect combination of the whole energy of VICIOUS RUMORS and TESTAMENT, merged into one song.” And last but not least:Brad Gillis, who otherwise makes his living as one of the band leaders inNIGHT RANGER, is one of Geoff Thorpe‘s close friends and already delivered a number of great solos on VICIOUS RUMORS previous album,“Warball”. This time around, Gillis contributed a matchless — as Thorpecalls it — “classic tremolo guitar solo” in “Deal With The Devil”. “I remember well when he replaced the late Randy Rhoads in Ozzy Osbourne‘s band. Brad has my utmost respect as a friend and colleague.”

METALLICA’s LARS ULRICH – Starring In HBO’s ‘Hemingway And Gellhorn’ – 2011-03-24

METALLICA drummer Lars Ulrich has been cast in an HBO drama also starring Nicole Kidman and Clive Owen. The film, called “Hemingway And Gellhorn”, is described as:

“a drama centered on the romance between Ernest Hemingway and WWII correspondent Martha GellhornHemingway‘s inspiration for “For Whom The Bell Tolls” and the only woman who ever asked for a divorce from the writer.”

Ulrich will play Dutch documentarian Joris Ivens in the TV movie.

The first photo of Ulrich on the “Hemingway And Gellhorn” set can be seen on RollingStone.com.

This will be Ulrich‘s first substantial role in a feature film after making a cameo as himself in 2010’s Russell Brand comedy “Get Him To The Greek”. He also appeared in the 2004 documentary about METALLICA,“Some Kind Of Monster”.

When asked about acting in “Get Him to the Greek”Lars said in a 2010 interview:

“It was so much fun. I mean, they sent the script and I learned my lines. And when I showed up on the set, none of it mattered — they just took the script and threw it away. We were just improvising and having fun and insulting each other, and it was a great time. Russell, obviously, is a stand-up comedian, first and foremost, or at least he started as a stand-up comedian, so it’s all just improvising.”
