SUNN O)))’s “Kannon”

Southern Lord Recordings will release a new studio album from SUNN O))), “Kannon“, on December 4.

Composed in the aftershadow of SUNN O))) ‘s most recent successes in immersive collaboration — the group having worked with Scott Walker on “Soused“, and ULVER on “Terrestrials” in 2013 and 2014 — and also from the broad and influential wake of their epitomic “Monoliths & Dimensions“, “Kannon” emerged both independently as a conceptual entity and with roots in the legacies of those projects, yet was fully realized years later in 2015.

The album consists of three pieces of a triadic whole: “Kannon 1, 2 and 3”.

The album celebrates many SUNN O))) traditions; “Kannon” was recorded and mixed with SUNN O)))‘s close colleague and co-producer Randall Dunn in Seattle, in Studio Litho, Aleph and Avast!, and the LP includes performances by long term allies and collaborators Attila Csihar, Oren Ambarchi, Rex Ritter, and Steve Moore, to name a few.

At the core, the composition centers around the dynamic and intense guitar and bass interplay of SUNN O)))‘s founders: Stephen O’Malley and Greg Anderson.

Kannon” will be available on gatefold LP, CD and digital formats worldwide on December 4, with a limited number of clear vinyl available on Black Friday RSD, Friday, November 27.

PHILIP ANSELMO’s SCOUR

Former PANTERA and current DOWN and SUPERJOINT frontman Philip Anselmo has launched a new project called SCOUR, also featuring contributions from John Jarvis (PIG DESTROYER, AGORAPHOBIC NOSEBLEED, FULGORA), Derek Engemann (CATTLE DECAPITATION), Chase Fraser (ex-ANIMOSITY, DECREPIT BIRTH), and Jesse Schobel (STRONG INTENTION, CAST THE STONE).

SCOUR

In a brand new interview with Hellbound.ca, Anselmo stated about the new project: “The SCOUR thing was something that just popped up, and it’s something that I think I can kill, something I can lay it out. They’re short songs. It’s a short EP, and that’s something I can knock out, I guess, after [SUPERJOINT is done with] the DANZIG tour.”

Anselmo continued: “I think [there’s] one of the fellows from CATTLE DECAPITATION, but it’s predominantly, in my ear, modern-ish black metal-sounding, thrashy black metal-type stuff. I’m going to put my own spin on it. I don’t have to sound like your boy from GORGOROTH [laughs] to get the point across, man. There’s other ways of singing over that style of music, and I shall employ many styles.”

LAMB OF GOD’s RANDY BLYTHE Perform With GOJIRA At SANTIAGO GETS LOUDER Festival

LAMB OF GOD‘s Randy Blythe joined French progressive metallers GOJIRA on stage at the Santiago Gets Louder festival in Santiago, Chile on September 27 to perform the song “Backbone“.

Blythe has since taken to Instagram to offer his account of the GOJIRA collaboration: “Have you ever been feeling kind of rough and run down, but your friends still want you to go out and do something with them? And even though you tell them, ‘No, I’m kind of beat, I feel like crap, plus I have to go to work in a bit, so I’m gonna have to say no, dudes. Sorry.’ And they STILL pressure you (‘COME ON, dude! It will be AWESOME!’) until you say, ‘Okay, okay — screw it. You win. Let’s go,’ and then, of course, you have a GREAT TIME. That’s what it was like before the show in Chile when my friend Joe asked me if I was gonna sing with his band, GOJIRA, during their set. I said, ‘No, my stomach is screwed up. I’m tired. And I have to play after you guys.’ Joe didn’t do the typical thing and say, ‘Oh, COME ON, dude!’ He just smiled and said, ‘Okay.’ But THIS is how MY friends peer-pressure you into doing stuff anyway — they walk over to where you are side stage and play MASSIVELY HEAVY RIFFS DIRECTLY IN YOUR FACE until you say, ‘Oh, screw it,’ take off your glasses, put down the camera, and jump onstage to sing ‘Backbone‘ with them. Freakin’ crafty Frenchmen — you gotta watch out for ’em. And it was a good time!”

GOJIRA freaking RULES. Best metal band I’ve heard in ages, bar NONE. Thanks, Joe!”

GOJIRA has spent the last few months in the studio working on the follow-up to 2012’s “L’Enfant Sauvage” album for a tentative early 2016 release via Roadrunner.

LAMB OF GOD‘s seventh full-length album, “VII: Sturm Und Drang“, was released on July 24 via Epic in the U.S. and Nuclear Blast Entertainment in all territories outside of North America.
