VIO-LENCE Recording First New Album In Over 30 Years!

The newly-reunited Vio-Lence is in the studio recording their first new album since Nothing to Gain. While Nothing to Gain came out in 1993, the album was originally recorded in 1990. Vio-Lence is working with producer Juan Urteaga (ExodusMachine HeadTestament) on the record, which is expected out sometime this year.

Guitarist Phil Demmel (ex-Machine Head) said the new album is five songs long and that he never expected the new material to happen.

“It’s been just over 30 years since we’ve recorded an album together,” said Demmel. “I never thought this would be happening and that anyone would even care after so long. All of the support is so appreciated and we hope you enjoy the 5 new songs we are tracking. Perry is working hard on his tracks and we’ll start guitars next week. Going to be fun. Thanks again for joining us on this ride.”

Queensryche’s Todd La Torre Posts Another New Solo Track, “Vanguards of the Dawn Wall”!

Darkened Majesty,” the debut solo track from Queensryche vocalist Todd La Torre, was an absolute ripper — way heavier than it had any right to be — a mix of old-school and new school that combines the best parts of thrash and heavy metal from different eras.

His latest,”Vanguards of the Dawn Wall,” proves that the first single was no anomaly: this one goes hard too! If there are still any Todd La Torre doubters left in the world who believe he’s not capable of filling Geoff Tate’s shoes in Queensryche — which he’s been doing admirably for over eight years now, by the way — this cut should be the final nail in their coffin.

La Torre offers of the track:

“‘Vanguards of the Dawn Wall’ is a full throttle thrasher! We wanted a no nonsense fast paced shredder, with intense guitar riffs, solos, drum work, and vocals. This song was inspired by a few different documentaries surrounding two particular near insurmountable feats of rock climbing. While initially written about those achievements, this song is really meant to represent and embody this very special breed and the spirit of all climbing.”

Rejoice In The Suffering comes out on February 5 via Rat Pak Records; pre-order here.

Portuguese melodic death metallers Moonshade have announced the most recent band lineup update with the incursion of new drummer and guitarist!

The band comments:

“Moonshade lives.
Two new wraith commanders have joined the legion. Luís Dias will be unblessing beautiful melodies behind the six-string, while Fernando Maia will be unleashing fury behind the drumkit. These two amazingly talented musicians can also be heard on their progressive metal project – Phase Transition. Show PT some love, if you are so inclined!
Meanwhile, Diogo Mota will remain making magic behind the kit for the writing and recording of Sun Dethroned’s follow-up, after which Fernando Maia will take up all the joys and sorrows of being the band’s drummer, both live and composition-wise. We welcome both Maia and Luís with a full heart and believe that their titanic talent and amazing personalities will be paramount for providing you with something of hightened grandeur.
In short, this new incarnation of Moonshade will be haunting you from now on.
Join us.
You are expected. ”

Asphyx Unleash Video for “The Nameless Elite”!

Dutch death metallers Asphyx have unveiled their latest single, “The Nameless Elite,” along with a music video.

The third single from the band’s forthcoming album, Necroceros, features a stomping, mid-paced groove underneath the band’s trademark plodding riffs. FrontmanMartin van Drunen offered of the song and video:

“This third single of our forthcoming ‘Necroceros’ album is entitled ‘The Nameless Elite’ and is about modern-day warfare, especially about the brave men and women in the many international elite units that combat any form of terror to protect us all against violent acts of insanity. We thought the location at the Overloon War Museum was a fantastic one to shoot a video for any kind of song dealing about war and the Sherman tank in the clip actually did serve during WWII on the battlefields in that area. It may not be directly related to the content of the track, but Asphyx is a band that has always and will always take on any subject concerning war, without glorifying it. War is Hell.”

Asphyx’s tenth full-length studio album, Necroceros, arrives on January 22 viaCentury Media; pre-order here.

Alexi Laiho has passed away!

We mourn the death of Alexi Laiho !

One of the most renowned guitarists in the world, Alexi Laiho, has passed away. The musician, most notably known as the front man of Children Of Bodom, died in his home in Helsinki, Finland, last week. Laiho had suffered from long-term health issues during his last years.

Alexi Laiho and drummer Jaska Raatikainen founded CHILDREN OF BODOM in 1993, and the band was one of the most internationally acclaimed metal acts in Finland up until their very last farewell concert in December of 2019. Last year Alexi Laiho put together BODOM AFTER MIDNIGHT, who recorded three songs and shot one music video, which will be released later on posthumously.

Besides CHILDREN OF BODOM, Laiho was known for acts such as WARMEN, SINERGY, KYLÄHULLUT and THE LOCAL BAND. Awarded with a Metal Hammer Golden Gods and several other international prizes, the guitarist was also the main star, leading a group of one hundred guitar players at Helsinki Festival in 2015 in “100 Guitars From Hel” – a massive concert piece he composed.

“We are crushed by the sudden passing of our dear friend and band member. Words cannot describe this shock and the profound sadness that we feel”, Daniel Freyberg, Mitja Toivonen and Waltteri Väyrynen from BODOM AFTER MIDNIGHT state.

The talented guitarist and musician relished his roles as stepdad in his patchwork family, and as uncle and godfather. Especially during the last years, the important family ties brought a welcomed balance to his life and the active touring. Laiho was particularly close with his big sister, parents and his sister’s daughter. Laiho’s sister says:

“We are all absolutely shocked and devastated. We ask for privacy and understanding during these hard times. My little brother’s funeral will take place privately.”

Alexi Laiho will also be deeply missed by his family in Australia.
“Alexi was the most loving and magnificent husband and father. Our hearts are eternally broken”, Kelli Wright-Laiho says.

GHOST Is ‘Working On Several Big Things’ For 2021!

Swedish metallers GHOST have shared an end-of-year Facebook update indicating that announcements about new music and live shows will be forthcoming in the next few months. The Tobias Forge-fronted act has been working on “several big things” for 2021 and will be issuing sporadic updates throughout the year.

The full message from A Nameless Ghoul, which was posted on December 30, reads: “Dear Friends, I hope this message finds you relatively well and hopeful for the future.

“Needless to say, we have all experienced a strange year -some of us an absolutely devastating year with loved ones passing, loneliness and a very somber outlook for the future. Yet there is some distance to go before we are somewhat back to where we’d regard life as normal again.

“With this , I want you all to know that we are working diligently on several big things for next year, so please do not confuse our silence with inactivity. And I confess, I wanted to reach out to let you all know we miss you, eternally.

“News pertaining to 2021 will be rolled out throughout the new year, so I ask for nothing but your patience.

“In the interim, focus on taking care of yourselves and your loved ones. Have hope and strive for a better and more optimistic future, because it’s all within reach. We are almost there.

“Let’s end this year with the knowledge that the roaring TWENTIES will begin in 2021!

“Happy Holidays and much love”.

Last October, Forge told Sweden Rock Magazine that he was planning to enter the studio in January to begin recording GHOST‘s fifth album. “The actual recording will last around six weeks and then there’s two to three weeks of mixing and mastering,” he said. “So sometime in March the record should be finished, but it won’t be released until after the summer. As it looks now, knock on wood, we will then go on tour. We won’t release an album until we know that we are actually going on tour. The album release will coincide with the start of a tour. Of course, we could announce an album release date and then, for some reason, it might not be possible to tour, but that’s a whole other matter.”

In March 2019, at the final concert of GHOST‘s “Prequelle” album cycle in Mexico City, the band introduced the new character who will front the act for its next LP phase: Papa Emeritus IV.

Forge performed as a “new” Papa Emeritus on each of the band’s first three LPs, with each version of Papa replacing the one that came before it. Papa Emeritus III was retired in favor of Cardinal Copia before the release of 2018’s “Prequelle” album.

In October 2019, Forge confirmed to U.K.’s Kerrang! magazine that there would be a new character fronting GHOST by the time the group’s next LP sees the light of day.

“Prequelle” debuted at No. 3 on the Billboard 200 and features the chart-topping singles “Rats” and “Dance Macabre”.

In December 2018, GHOST nabbed two Grammy nominations, “Best Rock Album” for “Prequelle” and “Best Rock Song” for “Rats”.

Five years ago, GHOST became the first Swedish rock band ever to win a Grammy — 2016’s “Best Metal Performance” for the song “Cirice”.

Legendary Guitarist JOHN SYKES Releases Music Video For New Single ‘Dawning Of A Brand New Day’!

Legendary English guitarist John Sykes (TYGERS OF PAN TANGTHIN LIZZYWHITESNAKEBLUE MURDERSYKES) has released the official music video for a new song called “Dawning Of A Brand New Day”. The track, which was recorded at least four years ago, is expected to appear on Sykes‘s long-awaited new solo album, “Sy-Ops”, tentatively due later this year.

The “Dawning Of A Brand New Day” video was produced by Parker Thibault, with additional footage courtesy of Natasha Gregory and James Sykes.

Last year, Sykes parted ways with Golden Robot Records without releasing a single record through the label.

Sykes‘s partnership with the Australian company was first announced in January 2019. At the time, John promised that his his first album in two decades would arrive before the end of 2019. However, things apparently went south shortly after the signing, with Sykes later accusing the label of making “little attempt to move things forward despite our best efforts and patience.”

“Sy-Ops” is expected to include such other tracks as “Believe In Yourself”“My Guitar” and “Out Alive”.

Speaking to Reality Check TV at the January 2019 Hall Of Heavy Metal History event in Anaheim, California, Sykes stated about his absence from the rock scene: “I’m looking forward to getting out on the road and playing again. I kind of go underground and stay there for a while. I don’t know, man. Sometimes I just take off and shut it all down. But I’m getting the itch, I’ve been having the itch to get back out and play, so I’m looking forward to that.”

Asked about the musical direction of his new record, Sykes said: “It’s kind of got flavors of old and new. But I think it’ll be pleasing to a lot of people to hear it. I think it’ll touch a fair few people if they check it out. It’s a good, solid album — it’s not just a couple of tracks and a load of fillers.”

Sykes‘s band for his upcoming tour is expected to include his onetime BLUE MURDER bandmate Tony Franklin (bass) and Fred Boswell Jr. (drums), both of whom are pictured with John below.

John‘s best-known work was when he joined WHITESNAKE and co-wrote the band’s self-titled seventh studio album, released in 1987. It produced a major power ballad hit, “Is This Love”, along with the No. 1 hit “Here I Go Again”. The album was a major crossover hit, eventually selling over eight million copies in the U.S. alone.

Sykes announced his departure from THIN LIZZY in July 2009, explaining that “I feel it’s time to get back to playing my own music.”
